There’s something magical about golden hour. The warm sunlight, soft glow, and peaceful atmosphere create the perfect backdrop for capturing genuine family moments. As a Charlotte family photographer, these are the sessions I find myself returning to again and again.

Recently, I had the joy of photographing a sweet family of three during a golden hour session at Abersham Park. Mom, Dad, and their baby daughter spent the evening simply enjoying time together, and those authentic interactions made for some of my favorite family portraits.

Why Golden Hour is Perfect for Family Photos

Golden hour occurs shortly before sunset when the sun sits low in the sky and creates a soft, flattering light. Unlike the harsh midday sun, golden hour allows for beautiful skin tones, dreamy backgrounds, and a warm, timeless feel in every image.

For families with young children, it’s also a wonderful opportunity to slow down and focus on connection rather than posing. Some of the best photographs happen in the in-between moments — snuggling, giggling, and exploring together.

As we walked through the park, baby girl was completely captivated by the tall grass, flowers, and golden sunlight peeking through the trees. Mom and Dad spent the evening cuddling, playing, and soaking in this fleeting season of parenthood.

Those genuine expressions are exactly what family photography is all about. Rather than focusing on perfect poses, I aim to document real memories that families will cherish for years to come.
